This doesn't come naturally.

I will let you in on a little secret...
My house is not spotless. Not even a little. This is actually not a surprise at all to my family, or my best friends growing up. My mama always told me it looked like a tornado went through my room. My best friend, Brittany, used to clean my room for me when she came over. Yes, it was that bad.

I tell you that slightly embarrassing piece of information  so that you know, when it comes to homemaking, I am no expert. Though I wish I was, and I someday hope to be. That's one reason why I started this blog. To document what I'm learning and share it with you. To ask for advice, share advice, and hopefully at the end of the day we will both be inspired to make our homes a little more homey.

The hardest part of keeping house for me is staying on top of the clutter. In the interest of full disclosure this is what my house looks like right now. (but in my defense we just got back from vacation. Also, our A/C is broken and its 500 thousand BILLION degrees and I do not want to move from my spot in front of the fan)

What about you? Does cleaning and organizing come naturally or do you have to really work at it? Which part of housekeeping takes the most work for you?

  1. I clean a lot. And yet, its never enough. I don't count the toddler toys as clutter or a mess, mainly because no matter how many times you clean it, its going back to where it was. Its a cycle. So I just ignore it as part of the floor. How do I clean? A little bit at a time, everyday. If I go to the bathroom, I wipe down the sink or mirror. If I go to get something to eat, I can't eat until I clean the stove or do the dishes or even wipe down the counters. Once a week (or whenever I feel like it), I do a deep clean. That involves the tub, toilet (the toilet gets wiped down every other day because I'm a germaphobe), the floors, the stove, oven, table, counters, sinks, everything. I do the floors in segments during the week. I'll do the kitchen floor on Monday, the hallway and family room on Tuesday, bedrooms on Wednesday (not really on those days, but for example's sake). Then on Friday, I do them all with a more powerful cleaner. The think that takes the most work for me is shampooing the couch and rug. But I do that once a month since I'm usually spot treating and vacuuming them every other day. Phew.. I clean a lot lol

    1. AJ, I try and do the "clean a different area per day" thing too but I have a hard time sticking to it. Oh well.. practice makes perfect!

  2. Looks cleaner than mine. Lol. Right now there are dishes in the sink, stuff on the counters, clean folded laundry on the kitchen table, toys all over the living room and the coffee table is under the window instead of in the middle of the rug where it belongs (in my defense I moved it there so that my bug-a-boo can stretch out, roll around and hopefully hone in some crawling skills). So yeah, it's a mess. But I worked today. I was up at 6am, out the door after getting 3 kids dressed, fed and in the car at 730. I worked all day, got home at 6. Lucky for me my 10 year old made him and my 2.5 year old corn dogs for dinner so that was taken care of. But during that I nursed the baby, fed the baby, played with the little ones, got jammies on, nursed the baby again and now it's 930 and I have no desire to do anything except plop my butt on the couch (after I'm done reading through your blog :) ). My point in all this is I've learned not to beat myself up over a messy house. I'm a working mama with 3 kids. It's not easy. One way or another it will get done before the ants take over the sink and before we are knee deep in toys. Lol. But I will not beat myself up or feel like a bad wife, mom, homemaker, etc...

    1. Aubrey, I can't imagine trying to keep a house clean, take care of three kids, AND work full time. That's a lot to juggle!
